And the Nominees Are… A Production Designer’s Oscar Dream

23rd January 2026

It’s that time of year again. The nominations for the 98th Academy Awards were announced yesterday,  and as the industry buzzes with predictions, we at DRS Film Sets are raising a glass to the incredible artistry of our fellow craftspeople.

As always, our eyes are firmly fixed on one category in particular: Best Production Design.

This year’s lineup is a testament to the power of world-building, with five films that have transported audiences to vastly different, immersive environments.

The nominees are:

•Frankenstein (Production Design: Tamara Deverell; Set Decoration: Shane Vieau)

•Hamnet (Production Design: Fiona Crombie; Set Decoration: Alice Felton)

•Marty Supreme (Production Design: Jack Fisk)

•One Battle After Another (Production Design: Florencia Martin)

•Sinners (Production Design: Hannah Beachler; Set Decoration: Monique Champagne)

While every nominee has crafted a stunning visual landscape, we’d be lying if we said we weren’t a little biased. Back in November, we put our stake in the ground and called it: Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein was our frontrunner.

And we’re thrilled to see the Academy agrees.

Having had the immense pleasure of working on this gothic masterpiece, we know firsthand the level of genius and meticulous detail that went into its creation. From the 26-foot clifftop laboratory to the ice-bound Arctic ships, every set was a monumental feat of construction and imagination. It’s the kind of practical, epic-scale set building that the Academy’s Production Design branch so often, and so rightly, rewards.

It’s a proud moment for us to see our handiwork on that prestigious list. While the competition is fierce, particularly from the record-breaking 16-time nominee Sinners and the meticulously recreated world of Hamnet, we believe the gothic grandeur and imaginative scope of Frankenstein gives it the edge.

The final envelopes will be opened on March 15th.

Until then, we’ll be celebrating the nomination and the incredible talent that brought this monster to life.
